One of Greencastle's
representative institutions is that of the Greencastle Elevator Company,
which for the last twenty years has been doing a large jobbing and retail
business throughout the Cumberland Valley. The activities of this
institution are many and run in several different lines. They supply the
farming and dairy interests of this section with the most complete line
carried by any general warehouse in the Valley, as well as furnish a market
for all the products of the soil. Their lumber yards and sheds are stocked
with such a quantity and variety of dressed and undressed lumber as would
be a credit to a city yard. They have just added a planing mill equipped
with modern woodworking machinery and are turning out sash, doors, interior
finish and store furnishings unsurpassed in quality and workmanship.
The plant of the
Greencastle Elevator Company covers about four acres of ground on which are
located a 25,000 bushel Grain Elevator, a 600 ton Coal Elevator, Hay
Warehouse, Planing Mill, and large lumber and Storage Sheds. They employ
about twenty trained men in their various departments.
The most modern and
approved cleaning and conveying machinery is installed in the Grain and Coal
Elevators and the company is well prepared to take care of the trade of this
community. The men at the head of this concern are men of well known
business ability and have had many years of experience and business training
in their line of trade. They are Jno. A. Diehl, J. Ed. Omwake, Geo. E.
Diehl and Chalmers P. Omwake. They are all native of Franklin County, and
Chalmers P. Omwake is the active manager of the Greencastle Plant. The
Greencastle Elevator Company is one of the solid institutions of the
Cumberland Valley and enjoys an enviable reputation in Southern Pennsylvania
business circles.
