Vintage Hats 1940-1950

History:  WWII ended in 1945.  Women worked in the factories and joined the military.  Some women remained in the workforce after the war but many returned to their homes.  The Great Baby Boom was here!  The sound of the Big Band was popular.

Fashion:  Because of shortages, clothing was plainer and boxy looking with padded shoulders and shorter skirts.  After the war Christian Dior burst into the fashion realm with his “New Look” – slopping shoulders, curvaceous bust line, tiny waist, and longer skirt length.

Hats:  The 1930’s styles remained popular along with snoods, and the fedora.  Dior entered with the small, narrow pillboxes, styles that hugged the head.

ca. 1940–1950 A round, small ‘hat’ of black gathered velvet.

It is really just an ornament for the head meant to be worn with the “loop” over the back of the head and the surprisingly pink feathers forming the apex.

The vintage ceramic display head was in disrepair and needed to be repainted by Becky Manifold.
