History:
The baby boomers’ decade – JFK was president and we lived in “Camelot”, then
his assassination, Viet Nam, Martin Luther King and Civil Rights, pot,
anti-war demonstrations, sit-ins, psychedelic drugs and colors, The
Beatles!!, King and Kennedy assassinations, Flower Power and hippies, the
beginning of Women’s Lib, and a man on the moon!
Fashion: Both bell-shaped skirts as
well as chemises and sheaths were worn during the early transition years.
Skirt lengths were knee length. Then the baby boomers took over with mini
skirts. Skirts then went thigh high, and eventually to the micro mini height
with heavy eye liner, and pale lips, panty hose and boots completing the
look. The hippie look included bell-bottom jeans, fringed vests, sandals or
bare feet, granny gowns, and long, straight ironed hair.
Hats: The deep pillbox, deep-crowned
fedoras and derbies, sailors with upturned brims were popular styles. As
hairstyles became bigger and teased, hats began to eventually fall out of
fashion.

ca. 1970 A rolled-brim hat looking very youthful
in appearance.
It has a certain amount of stiffness but retains a
soft, fresh look from the stitching which covers it and the application of
the ranunculus flowers. The color is quite startling and calls attention to
it. Anyone wearing it must possess a good measure of self-assurance. |
